Speaker

Terri Phoenix speaking about LGBTQIA+ issues at a podium 2016

I have given over 1,000 talks at the local, state, national, and international level. Most of those have been invited presentations on LGBTQIA+ communities for Area Health Education Centers, professional organizations such as the North Carolina Psychological Association, medical organizations, and community groups. I have been featured at the Ruth Pauley Lecture Series, Academic Impressions for a training on LGBTQIA+ communities, graduation ceremonies and have conducted a training in Australia for Halad to Health.

I am working on a book about my own recovery journey from childhood trauma and substance use. Operating from the framework of Adverse Childhood Experiences, my life is a testament to the power of supportive adults and mentors outside the family as protective factors. The small interventions and kindnesses of teachers, medical professionals, coaches, therapists and others helped keep a spark of hope alive and helped me to ultimately heal. I want to share how other people who work with youth can contribute and serve as a protective factor for youth experiencing chaotic and/or traumatic family situations.
